How To Run A Diesel Car On Used Cooking Oil

Many of us are not aware that diesel engine was originally designed to run on vegetable oil. Rudolf Diesel came up with an idea of combusting engine using vegetable oil. But not all engines are suitable for this idea. Most modern engines are not designed to use vegetable oil as fuel without some additional process. Modern systems that use vegetable oil as fuel simply heat the vegetable oil in the tank or fuel lines before it is injected directly to engine. You may need an extra tank for the vegetable oil, a heater system to heat it up and a filter to avoid clogging.

Most common way is to start your engine using the petroleum based diesel fuel for a certain moment of time until the vegetable oil heats up. With proper temperature, the engine automatically switches to the vegetable oil as fuel. The engine will momentarily switch back to standard diesel when the car is switched off to clear the fuel lines of vegetable oil, getting ready for your car next usage. During cold weather it is important to heat the vegetable oil properly because it may be solidified by the weather condition. Vegetable oil should be properly liquefied so it will flow smoothly on the fuel lines.

Biofuels For Cars

If you’re gonna go get yourself an alternative fuel vehicle then you better get acquainted with the types of biofuel. It is defined as any type of fuel derived from biological sources. Biofuels are used in households around the world as fuel for heating purposes and in some countries, they are used to propel vehicles. Here are the most common types:

Vegetable oil. It’s not only useful in the kitchen but on the road, too. Used vegetable oil usually undergoes treatment (which usually involves heating) before they’re ready to be used as fuel. However, there are certain engines available today that are compatible with non-processed vegetable oil.

Biodiesel. Derived from processed organic oils and fats, it is one of the most common types of biofuel and has the least emission level. In the last ten years, most diesel engines are already configured for biodiesel compatibility. Its use has also dramatically increased in the US in the last two years.

Alcohol fuel. Prime examples include ethanol, propanol and butanol. Ethanol is widely popular worldwide, especially in South America where motorists use it in place of gasoline or a mixture of both. However, ethanol can be very corrosive and is often diluted to decrease its corrosive effect.

Biogas. This is produced when biodegradable materials undergo anaerobic digestion (through the help of microorganisms). In compressed form, it can be used to fuel internal combustion engines in cars.

Syn-gas. Synthesis gas is basically combined carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It can be used easily as fuel on internal combustion engines.

New generation biofuels. These are newly discovered bio-derived types which scientists are currently exploring as feasible alternative fuels. These include non-food crops which when subjected to further processing can yield usable fuel. In some countries, algae are being carefully studied as a possible source of fuel.

Of course, the effective use of this type of alternative fuel is still being discussed today. The main issue is how to achieve sustainable production and accordingly, the manner of distribution to consumers. On the upside, if they do become the primary source of fuel for vehicles, it could cause far less damage to the atmosphere compared to fossil fuels. Will biofuels ever replace petroleum fuels? Only time will tell.

What is Palm Oil biodiesel?

How is Palm Oil Biodiesel made?
Palm Oil Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the Palm oil. The process leaves behind two products — methyl esters (the chemical name for palm oil biodiesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products).

Is Palm Oil Biodiesel the same thing as raw vegetable palm oil?
No! Fuel-grade palm oil biodiesel must be produced to strict industry specifications (ASTM D6751) in order to insure proper performance. Palm Oil Biodiesel is one of the few biodiesels to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Biodiesel that meets ASTM D6751 and is legally registered with the Environmental Protection Agency is a legal motor fuel for sale and distribution. Raw Palm Oil cannot meet biodiesel fuel specifications, it is not registered with the EPA, and it is not a legal motor fuel.

For entities seeking to adopt a definition of biodiesel for purposes such as federal or state statute, state or national divisions of weights and measures, or for any other purpose, the official definition consistent with other federal and state laws and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines is as follows:

Palm Oil Biodiesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from Palm Oil vegetable oils which conform to ASTM D6751 specifications for use in diesel engines. Biodiesel refers to the pure fuel before blending with diesel fuel. Biodiesel blends are denoted as, "BXX" with "XX" representing the percentage of biodiesel contained in the blend (ie: B20 is 20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel).

Why should I use palm oil biodiesel?
Palm Oil Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources, i.e. Palm Oil and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. Since it is made from renewable resources i.e. Palm Oil, its use decreases our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy.

Where do I get Palm oil biodiesel?
It can be purchased directly from biodiesel producers and marketers, petroleum distributors.

What is biodiesel?

Very often, a broad, general description is used to define biodiesel in a way that is easy to understand by the general public. However, when these broad descriptions are adopted by an authoritative body as a formal definition, they can include a wide range of experimental fuels that are not biodiesel. The term ‘biodiesel’ has a specific, technical definition that has been agreed to through a painstaking process by members of industry and government which has received full approval by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), the premier standard setting organization for fuels and fuel additives. That definition is used for purposes such as alternative fuel designation, EPA registration, or other regulatory purposes. Nonetheless, this specific technical definition can be confusing to the general public.

General Definition of Biodiesel:
Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines derived from natural oils like soybean oil, palm oil and which meets the specifications of ASTM D 6751.

Clarifying language to general definition:
Biodiesel can be used in any concentration with petroleum based diesel fuel in existing diesel engines with little or no modification. Biodiesel is not the same thing as raw vegetable oil. It is produced by a chemical process which removes the glycerin from the oil.

Technical Definition for Biodiesel (ASTM D 6751) and Biodiesel Blend:
Biodiesel, na fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, designated B100, and meeting the requirements of ASTM D 6751.

Biodiesel Blend, na blend of biodiesel fuel meeting ASTM D 6751 with petroleum-based diesel fuel, designated BXX, where XX represents the volume percentage of biodiesel fuel in the blend.

Clarifying language to technical definition:
Biodiesel, as defined in D 6751, is registered with the US EPA as a fuel and a fuel additive under Section 211(b) of the Clean Air Act.

Biodiesel fuel is gaining popularity as an alternative fuel source that is readily made from renewable resource.

With the rising price of gasoline these days the idea of turning to a more affordable alternative fuel source is becoming more appealing to many people. Biodiesel fuel is an alternative fuel that many people are making right in their own backyards from renewable sources that are readily available.

Another alternative fuel that is in the news these days is ethanol. Ethanol is being sold in the U.S. and in other countries as a viable alternative to regular gasoline but if you don’t have access to an ethanol station or don’t have a car that has been modified to run on it then another choice is needed. In-line heating systems are better than a pre-heating system but they have one common flaw, they all require a pump to circulate the oil through the heater in order for the heater to work. They are mainly intended to pre-heat the oil and dry the water out of biodiesel that has been water-washed. With an in-line heater using submerged elements, the user must remember to start the flow of liquid before turning the heater on.Note: All heaters have what is called a Watt Density. Watt density is the number of watts the heater puts out divided by the surface area of the heaters element. Advantages of Biodiesel fuel

Advantages and Disadvantages of Biofuels

The burgeoning petroleum crisis is forcing us to find feasible alternative fuels. Lately, biofuels have come up as the most preferred alternative the world over. However there is a controversy over their use. Read on to learn about their pros and cons.

As environmental consciousness is increasing, more and more vehicle drivers are turning to biofuels.

What are Biofuels?

Biodiesel are combustible fuel produced from biomass. These fuels are usually in the form of alcohols, esters, ethers, and other chemicals produced from biomass. The two main biofuels are biodiesel and bioethanol.

How is biodiesel made?

It is made from vegetable oil and rapeseed oil, or it can be converted from used cooking oil and tallow (animal fat), which would otherwise be incinerated, put in a landfill or exported.

How is bioethanol made?

 

Microalgae biodiesel biofuel oil

It is made from carbohydrate crops such as maize, sugar beet, wheat, potatoes and a variety of other starch and sugar crops. Bioethanol can also be derived from cellulose found in common vegetation ("cellulosic ethanol"). For instance, in the USA, attempts are being made to extract bioethanol from switchgrass, which grows 12feet tall. Henry Ford’s Model T car was originally designed to run on ethanol.

Disadvantages of Biofuels

  • Growing crops for biofuel absorbs the carbon that biofuels emit, but it does not absorb the fossil fuel emissions created in planting, fertilizing, treating, harvesting, transporting and processing these crops before they can be converted into fuel. There are also considerable carbon emissions from the coal or gas required to heat the required raw materials in the manufacturing process. Its production can also lead to environmental destruction. Brazil, for example, produces ethanol from sugar cane but to do so is cutting down the Amazon rain forest, thus causing great damage to the environment.
  • Too much concentration on running vehicles on plant oil would set up a direct competition between feeding the cars and feeding the people. This would not increase our self-reliance but would increase our food and energy vulnerability.

Advantages of Biodiesel

  • It is made from renewable resources.
  • It performs just as well as the normal diesel fuel.
  • It causes less pollution as compared to diesel-powered engines.
  • It is relatively less inflammable compared to the normal diesel.
  • It can be mixed with normal diesel fuel.
  • It is biologically degradable and reduces the danger of contamination of soil and underground water during transport, storage and use.
  • It contains no sulphur, the element responsible for acid rain.
  • There are no extra costs for the conversion of engines in comparison to other biological fuels.
  • It is suitable for catalytic convertor.
  • Engines last longer when using it.
  • Its refineries are comparitively simpler and environmental-friendly in design than typical petrochemical refineries.
  • It produces 78% less carbon dioxide (CO2) than normal diesel fuel.
  • It has a higher cetane and lubricity rating than pure petroleum-based diesel fuel, which improves engine efficiency and operating life cycle.

 

Disadvantages of Biodiesel

  • It is more expensive than normal diesel fuel.
  • It tends to reduce fuel economy.
  • It is less suitable for use in low temperatures.
  • It cannot be transported in pipelines.
  • It gives out more nitrogen oxide emissions.
  • Only a few petrol stations offer biodiesel-fuel.
  • It can only be used in diesel-powered engines.
  • It can cause inner fuel tubes of older vehicles to lose their long-lasting qualities.
  • It is more likely than petroleum diesel to attract moisture, which can cause problems in cold weather (fuel freezing, deposit of water in the vehicle fuel delivery system, fuel cold flow, clouding, and an increased corrosion, for example) and increase the risk of microbial growth (which can also clog engine filters).

Advantages of Bioethanol

  • The use of ethanol-blended fuels such as E85 (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) can reduce the net emissions of greenhouse gases by as much as 37.1%, which is a significant amount.
  • Ethanol-blended fuel as E10 (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline) reduces greenhouse gases by up to 3.9%.
  • The net effect of ethanol use results in an overall decrease in ozone formation, an important environmental issue. (The emissions produced by burning ethanol are less reactive with sunlight than those produced by burning gasoline, which results in a lower potential for forming the damaging ozone).
  • Ethanol is considered a renewable energy resource because it is primarily the result of conversion of the sun’s energy into usable energy. Creation of ethanol starts with photosynthesis, which causes feedstocks, such as sugar cane, to grow. These particular feedstocks are processed into ethanol.
  • It benefits energy security as it shifts the need for some foreign-produced oil to domestically-produced energy sources.
  • It reduces greenhouse gases.
  • It burns more cleanly (more complete combustion).
  • It reduces the amount of high-octane additives.
  • The fuel spills are more easily biodegraded or diluted to non toxic concentrations.

Disadvantages of Bioethanol

  • Production of ethanol requires significant energy and large amounts of land.
  • Fuels with more than 10% ethanol content are not compatible with non E85-ready fuel system components and may cause corrosion of ferrous components.
  • It can negatively affect electric fuel pumps by increasing internal wear and undesirable spark generation.
  • It is not compatible with capacitance fuel level gauging indicators and may result in erroneous fuel quantity indications in vehicles that employ that system.

Diesel Vs Petrol Engines

There are always choices to be made and one of them has something to do with cars. If you love to speed up, you would go for turbo but should you purchase petrol or diesel? That is something you have to weigh carefully based on your preferences. To help you compare, read some notes below and check against your requirements.

How a turbo diesel engine works

Diesel cars practically thrive on compressed air created by the pistons at a ratio much higher than that of petrol engines. As diesel fuel is injected for combustion, fuel ignites as it comes in contact with the compressed air. Ignition is possible since this compressed air has a high temperature that reaches 700-900C or about 1300 - 1650F. The increased temperature expands the cylinders, which pushes for pressure build-up that moves the piston.

Petrol or Diesel engines: What are the main differences?

The compressed air in diesel cars is so hot that when the fuel is injected, it readily burns so there is no need for spark plugs in diesel cars. Because of this, diesels can be accurately called ‘compression ignition engines’ while petrol cars have ’spark ignition engines.’ There are no breakers or coils in the diesel like in petrol. Diesels do not have throttle plates. Power depends on the controlled, injected fuel. Electronic engine management is not necessary in diesels but some modern models already have electronically controlled pumps.

Advantages of the diesel engine over its petrol counterpart; In terms of performance, the latest versions of performance turbo diesel engines are controlled electronically. This way the torque produced is at par or simply better than that of petrol-driven vehicles. Diesels are not immune to cold and damp weather conditions. In theory, turbo diesels are more efficient than petrol cars. Cars running on diesel are much more environment-friendly. Diesels can reach more mileage than their petrol counterparts; diesel is cheaper than petrol in the market. Turbo charging a diesel car is much easier. Diesels are great for short trips because their ignition is not affected by temperature. Engines’ efficiency is high whether from a cold start or not. Diesel engines are built to last longer. The cold starts are the petrol car’s primary killer. Lubrication is damaged easily in petrol cars.

The disadvantages of diesel over petrol engines; Compression ratio of 22:1 is good for engine brakes but this makes it harder to start the engine. Owner should invest in a good battery and starter motor. Diesels would need glow plugs or electric heaters so that engine will start easily. One plug is needed per cylinder and each plug eats up 15 amps - which consumes battery. Diesel cars only gain about 70bhp with 1.9 liters of fuel versus the 100bhp in petrol cars. Diesel engines are heavy. Steering is heavy so you’ll need power steering option. Some modern turbo diesels run quietly but most are really noisy.
